National Champions: University of Massachusetts, Boston

Double Take, representing the University of Massachusetts, Boston, took home the 2023-24 national championship at Pack the House, hosted by NU Breakers. Their victory capped off an incredibly successful season, featuring wins at Harvard’s Battle for Boston and NYU’s Pass the Torch. We congratulate UMass Boston for an amazing season and are excited to see what the future holds for all the crews who competed with us this season!


EAST COAST QUALIFIER SERIES

The East Coast region will have a Qualifier Series from October 21st through December 2nd. The top 6 colleges based on their best 2 performances will automatically qualify for the Finals!

Claim to Fame presented by Bboys Anonymous (UC Irvine) will serve as the west coast qualifier event!

On February 10th, Claim to Fame featured a 3v3 intercollegiate battle, with the top two teams claiming an automatic qualifying spot in the national championship. Stateside Breaks of San Diego State University, took home the top prize with a victory over host team, Bboys Anonymous, in the finals.

Event Recaps

The Breakoff | October 21, 2023

The 2023-24 NCBA season kicked off at The Breakoff presented by Johns Hopkins Breakers. The Breakoff’s intercollegiate bracket was the first time Johns Hopkins has hosted an NCBA event and was the second ever in the DMV region. This event featured 16 crews representing 9 different colleges.

Home team, Pyromania, took the W at the event, vaulting Johns Hopkins to the top of the east coast rankings. This crew was composed of a graduate student squad represented by bboys Blade, Yoonique, and Jay. New Jersey came in strong at the event though, with Rutgers and Princeton claiming three of the spots in top 4. Rutgers’ Knights of the Cypher brought their heat all the way to finals, challenging Pyromania for the trophy.

Meanwhile in the 1v1 bracket, it was an all DMV final with high school senior, Bboy Zastrow, of Dunes Crew, claiming the top spot over Bboy Roach. Along the way, he defeated bboys Axiz and Arrow.

Pyromania (JHU)

Battle for Boston | October 28, 2023

Harvard Breakers hosted the 7th edition of Battle for Boston, which for the second year in a row has served as one of the flagship events on the NCBA circuit. 43 crews battled it out with 23 different schools from all over the Northeast represented at the event.

After a long night of battling, Double Take from University of Massachusetts Boston (UMB) took the title over Bulletproof Funk from Boston University. Double Take was represented by UMB’s club president, Medium Roast, along with two freshmen, Boomerang and Klovr. UMB rolled deep at the event with one crew making top 8, one crew making top 16, and 2 additional crews representing. Once again, New Jersey came through strong with nearly 10 schools representing the region. Rutgers’ Knights of the Cypher led the way with a top 4 finish putting Rutgers at the top of the East Coast rankings through the first two events of the season. The evening was also full of solo-member crews, highlighted by bboy Soulless of Tufts making a run to top 4. Bboy Skee from Columbia and Bboy S Li from Emerson both made top 16 and both had to do tiebreakers rounds, testing their endurance and creativity levels.

In the Bonnie and Clyde bracket, h00z Dangerous crew, represented by Marie and Johnny OJ, took home the custom vinyl trophies over Steezy Camboz, represented by Thavy and Cozy. 14 crews fought it out in the second time the Bonnie and Clyde battle has appeared at Battle for Boston.

Double Take (UMB)

Pass the Torch | November 18, 2023

Pass the Torch represented a homecoming of intercollegiate battles to New York University. The home of the OG east coast collegiate battle, Breaks U, NYU Breakdancing Club brought collegiate battles back to the birthplace of hip hop!

27 crews from 14 different schools competed in heated battles all night with Double Take from University of Massachusetts Boston (UMB) taking the crown, defeating RUthless 4/6 from Rutgers in a tough finals battle. Double Take was represented by Medium Roast, Power Tim, and Conan. UMB established their dominance of the East Coast taking the win along with a second crew, Run UMB, placing top 4 (losing to Double Take) and another member solo representing into top 16. This event was the most geographically diverse event of the series so far, with crews ranging from New England to Virginia making the trip to the middle point of the east coast series.

Pass the Torch also featured a 1v1 open bracket where over 60 competitors entered to showcase their skills. Bboy Franky from Detroit, MI came out on the top of the crowded bracket, beating Rock Lobzter out of New Orleans.

Double Take (UMB)

Break Melee | December 2, 2023

Rutgers

Rutgers hosted the 5th edition of Break Melee, the second time the jam has served as the final flagship event on the NCBA circuit. 32 different crews from 16 different colleges (including one from Peking University) represented in the bracket!

At the end of it all, Rutgers defended their home turf after an intense finals, featuring a tie breaker, over Medical College of Wisconsin. The Rutgers team was represented by the duo of Magic Min and King Kai while Wisconsin was solo represented by bboy Riven, meaning each crew had to throw more rounds than usual in taking their shot at the victory. Rutgers rolled deep at their home event, with 7 crews battling and 4 making it into the stacked top 16. Tufts University also brought a large contingent to the away event, bringing 5 crews all the way down from Massachusetts. With the final season rankings on the line, Johns Hopkins’ Pyromania needed a victory to challenge University of Massachusetts, Boston (UMB) for the top spot but ultimately fell short in a top 4 loss against Wisconsin. They finish the series at 3rd, behind Rutgers in 2nd, and UMB in first. Rounding out the top 6 and earning an invite into the national finals bracket are Boston University (4th), Tufts (T-5th), and Princeton (T-5th).

Break Melee also featured their signature event, the 1v1 stock callout battle. The top 18 competitors were divided into cyphers of 6 and competed in individual callout battles until a winner stood alone from the dust. Bboy Wiz of Illadelph Phlave took the title after an intense final cypher, where he defeated multiple challengers in consecutive callouts to establish dominance in the bracket.
