2022-2023 SEASON

Final Season Standings

The Finals of the 2022-2023 season were held at Pack the House at Northeastern University on February 18, 2023. After a tough bracket featuring the best colleges from around the country, Rutgers’ Scarlet Flava ended the night with the trophy in hand. Coming in as the number 1 seed, they faced a tough bracket, beating Northeastern, Tufts, San Diego State, and George Mason University on the way to becoming the inaugural NCBA Champions!

George Mason University’s Geek Technique also made an impressive run to finals, beating University of Maryland, Northeastern, and Rutgers’ second squad along the way. Meanwhile, San Diego State’s Hostiles Inbound made a run to top 4 after previously making finals at Break Melee earlier in the year. University of Maryland’s B-Terps rounded out the top 4 after a season that included a victory at BreakInfamous.

Finals Recap

At the end of the Finals, three colleges were honored with achievement awards for the season:

Tufts University was given the Breaks Kru award for cypher and callout culture. Throughout the season, Tufts TURBO exemplified this important element of breaking culture at jams and even intercollegiate practice sessions.

Rutgers University received the Massive Monkees award for community engagement and contribution. RU Breaks played a strong role in the Jersey and east coast breaking community. They hosted public sessions along with three jams for their community. One of those, RUthless, was one of the most successful jams on the east coast for the year.

Harvard University was presented with the Floor Angelz award for gender diversity, representation, and empowerment. At all levels of leadership, membership, and jam invitations, Harvard Breakers had been committed to promoting diversity in the breaking community.

Season Awards

Breaker of the Year

Following the conclusion of the 2022-2023 academic year, the NCBA fielded nominations for Breaker of the Year. The criteria for nomination were: Skill, Community Contributions, Club Leadership, and Culture.

After a lengthy voting process and an in-depth panel discussion of community leaders, Jeff Min (Magic Min) of Rutgers was awarded the NCBA Breaker of the Year. As part of RU Break’s leadership team, Jeff exemplified the four criteria of this award. He was a teacher for club beginners, hosted events for the community, and was on the winning team at Break Melee and Pack the House. We congratulate Jeff on this well deserved award! The runner up for Breaker of the Year was Chris Yun of Northeastern University. As club president, he helped grow the club from a handful of individuals to a thriving club of 40+ members. He is actively engaged with the Boston breaking community and represented strongly at jams all year long.

All-Collegiate Crew

Along with Breaker of the Year, the open voting and community panel also chose an inaugural All-Collegiate Crew. Joining Chris Yun were Jathun Somasundaram (California Polytechnic - St Luis Obispo), Brandon Kim (San Diego State), Sydney Carmouche (University of Virginia), and Yuta Sugiyama (George Mason University). All of these individuals were exemplary community leaders and breakers. We congratulate them on their accomplishments!
